The original US Horse Welfare and Rescue Organization, a 501(c)3, was founded in 2016 but its founder quickly saw the need for an umbrella organization which would serve as a protective mantel over our equines, to lobby for laws which will be intolerant of slaughter, abuse, and neglect....and further  band rescues and horse welfare advocates together. On October 9, 2020, US Horse Welfare and Rescue National Coalition (USHWR-NC) formally filed papers of incorporation and 501(c)4 status, providing us with the legal reach to lobby for a better world for America's horses, wild and domesticated. The National Coalition equally reaches out through our advocacy and supportive programs to providing for our horses, their owners, and the nonprofit rescues when in need. USHWR-NC stands to provide America's horses with

ONE UNIFIED VOICE.

US Horse Welfare and Rescue National Coalition (USHWR-NC) is to serve as an all encompassing protective mantle over America’s Equines through Advocacy, Education, Outreach, Lobbying, and Supportive, Sustainable Programs for Rescues.

USHWR-NC serves to unify and empower Americans to lend their voices to all of America’s horses, and further encourages participation in the protection of our horses from abuse, neglect, and slaughter through programs and the engagement of Local, State, and Federal legislators to pass the SAFE Act and other bills as deemed appropriate for the protection of America's horses.

TOGETHER WE CAN!

getting ahead of the curve

A Statement From Our President and Founder

My life as a rescuer began in 2013 after foot surgery landed me on a couch, leg up, online looking for some amazing horses to buy. Over the next several weeks I received an online education about horse slaughter, potentially greater than any education one could get anywhere else...about anything else!! For me it was life changing, reading through information available to all of us. But for many Americans the topic is just not on their radar. I get that, Americans are busy. Most Americans go to work, come home, fix dinner for the family, fit in gym time, kids games, and a social life. Few have been afforded the opportunity to delve into the bowels of the underground horse slaughter pipeline as I have. Who knew how much that surgery would change my life and drive a new passion in me! But, this is beyond a passion, this is a moral responsibility, an obligation, something I just can't walk away from.
AMERICANS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF OUR HORSES!
After supporting several rescues across the country week after week for several months, I said to myself, “we are chasing our tails”. Week after week we are doing the same thing over and over again and getting nowhere.  We get a pit in our stomachs, beg for money to rescue one last soul before the end of the kill buyer’s day and next week we do it all again. We struggle with PTSD from seeing and knowing how many horses we are failing to help each week. Every week we only save roughly 15% of the horses shipping to slaughter. It’s not enough. It’s not good enough! We can and MUST do better as a nation!!
Over the next few years I had the opportunity to get to know several of my fellow rescuers fairly well. I watched them closely for a sense of sameness, a feeling that they aligned with me and my philosophy. It has taken time, but I am excited to say that I have found a wonderful group of ethical, philanthropic, like-minded rescuers that USHWR can confidently bring into the fold as advisors and governing members  US Horse Welfare and Rescue National Coalition.
IT’S TIME! Time to take action, to speak for the voiceless, to come together on a united front… to become a cohesive coalition of Americans from all walks of life and demand the humane treatment of America’s horses, pass legislation such as the SAFE Act, and put an end to horse slaughter.
Please join us in this ever important movement! The horses need each and every one of our voices to make the necessary permanent change to keeping America’s horses safe from abuse, neglect, and slaughter. Please join the coalition today.
Respectfully,
Susan E. Mitchell
